Types of lung cancer

Overview

Lung cancer is divided into three main groups based on several factors, primarily by its size and rate of metastasis, also known as the rate the cancer spreads throughout the lung or to other parts of the body.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

NSCLC is the most common type of lung cancer, comprising 80 to 85% of all lung cancers.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)

10 to 15% of lung cancers are SCLC This is the fastest growing type of lung cancer. It metastasizes and spreads to other parts of the body rapidly.

Lung carcinoid tumours are a rare type of lung cancer that tend to grow more slowly than other types of lung cancer.
